Not alone

Hi, Jesus loves you.

How bad were you hurt last year that you have chosen to be alone, an island? How do you think that you can make it as an Island for the twelve months of this New Year? God did not make you an Island, so you can never succeed as one. This post aims at confirming to you that you are not an Island.

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him – Genesis 2:18 (KJV)

But now has God set the members every one of them in the body, as it has pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. No, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary – 1 Corinthians 12:18-22 (KJV)

For by wise counsel you shall make your war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety – Proverbs 24:6 (KJV)

I am the vine, you are the branches: He that stays in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing – John 15:5 (KJV)

Oh mine, people hurt me a lot last year and I will not give anybody the opportunity to do so again, NOT THIS YEAR! I can imagine how you feel. It truly can be painful to be hurt by people, especially by those you least expect to hurt you. But that shouldn’t make you an Island, nobody is worth it!

God made Adam and put him in the best place ever with all the food and beauty you can think of, gave him sole authority to name all the animals and to manage the place. But God Himself for the first time in His creation, considered Adam’s being alone as not being good – Genesis 2:18. He had to make a perfect match to complement Adam: Eve.

Therefore you are not an Island; you are not made to be one. Your make-up demands that you associate with other human beings. You are made to NEED the help of some persons for you to enjoy your life and make the best out of it. You need people to talk to, listen to you, work with you and even to criticize you for you to succeed in life.

If success is your goal this New Year, then you need people. Your success plans will amount to dreams if you decide to walk alone. No matter how good you are in a thing, you need help even if it is small for you to succeed; it can even be a smile from a little child.

Paul illustrating the fact that you cannot succeed as one person used the human body to point out that we need each other – 1 Corinthians 12:18-22. The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. The body is not complete and will not function at her best if any part is missing or is sick, every part of the body is important. So also, you will not function well as an Island.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, as powerful as He is, could not deliver salvation single handedly to humanity, He needed the help of His twelve disciples to fulfill His purpose on earth. His disciples walked with Him and effectively spread the good news after His death and resurrection; that is why we are Christian believers today.

Now having said all the above, you can associate with people and still minimize their opportunity to hurt you. How do you do that?

  • Decide not to allow whatever anybody does to affect you. It is when you ponder over the bad somebody did to you that you feel hurt. Dying to self will help you a lot – Galatians 2:20
  • Choose to forgive anybody that offends you even before they do so, that is, forgive no matter what the person may have done – Matthew 18:21-22
  • Choose your friends wisely. You need multitude of counselors for safety (Proverbs 24:6) but you must choose them with great wisdom. A wise man said that friendship is not by force but by choice, so always make the right choice of friendship.
  • Implore the help of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. Without Christ, you can do nothing (John 15:5), including avoiding being hurt by people.

Truly many people have tried living as Islands but they never succeeded as one, instead their miseries only intensified. You are not an Island, God didn’t make you one. Allow Jesus to order you footsteps, help you make right decisions and choose your friends for you; and I promise you, this year shall be most fruitful for you.
