Do you love God? There are certain characteristics you find in any lover of God, one of which is prayerfulness. If you love God you will desire to be with Him at all times. Prayer is a platform for fellowshipping with God and expressing your love for Him. This post gives reasons why people who love God are prayerful.

I will love You, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies – Psalms 18:1-3 (NKJV).

Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know – Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV).

Many people call on God but not all love Him, for if anyone loves Him he or she will obey His commandments (John 14:23-24). However, you can’t love God and not call upon Him. Many people pray to God to receive from Him, but those who love God first and foremost just want to give to Him. They want to give Him praise and to worship Him like David (Psalm 18:1-3).

Prayer is a 2-way channel through which you commune with God. God speaks to you through His word, but through prayer, you have the opportunity to speak to God and also hear from Him. The amazing thing is that God wants to hear you too. This is why in many places in the scriptures He encourages His children to call upon Him (Jeremiah 33:3, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Colossians 4:2, Jeremiah 29:12, etc.)

When you love someone, you will long to speak with the person. Prayer gives us the chance to do the same with our Father in heaven. When you love someone and you are too busy to communicate with the person, your love becomes questionable. So also, you can’t love God and not have time to speak with Him.

Reasons why a lover of God is prayerful

There are many reasons why a Christian who loves God would love to pray; apart from asking for our heart desires and receiving them, other reasons include:

1. Fellowship

Fellowship is the paramount reason why a believing Christian prays. You would want to be with your Father. In His presence is fullness of Joy and at His right hand pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11). It is an opportunity to express your love for Him, to worship and give Him thanks, and to behold His beauty (Psalm 27:4). Prayer is a great time with your lover (God Almighty)! Those Christians who get to that intimacy with God, always return to experience it more and more, and in higher dimensions.

2. Obedience

Jesus said that if you love Him you should obey His commandments (John 14:15), and one of His commandments is that you should pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The scriptures also instruct that you should pray all kinds of prayers and requests (Ephesians 6:18); these include prayer for the Lord’s people (Ephesians 6:18), for all men and leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-3), for your enemies (Matthew 5:44), and for the land (2 Chronicles 7:14). If you love God, you will obey God and pray these prayers.

3. Revelation

Lovers of God also pray to get deeper revelations of God, His will for them and for other things (Jeremiah 33:3). As you commune with God in prayer, He reveals Himself to you more and more, and greater will your understanding of the scriptures be (Psalm 119:18). Paul, a man of great revelations from Christ (Galatians 1:12) prayed a lot (2 Timothy 1:3) and admonished that we should pray always (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Our Lord Jesus prayed always too and He never missed His assignment on earth. He was always in tune with God, the Father, and only did what the Father instructed Him to do (John 5:19-20). The widow that served God in prayers and fasting (Luke 2:36-38) had the revelation of Jesus as the redeemer and the deliverer, and when His parents brought Him into the temple, God led her to come and see Him

4. Dependence

In prayer, you see your limitations and how small you are compared to God (Isaiah 6:1-5), this helps you to depend on God more, Who is bigger than you are in all areas. It enables you to truly be a branch on the vine (John 15:1-8). I believe that Moses succeeded in his assignment with the Israelites because of his communion with God (Exodus 33:9-11) and how he considered himself as nothing compared to God (Exodus 16:8). He carried out only God’s commands, except when he struck the rock instead of speaking to it (Numbers 20:10-12).

5. Faith building

A lover of God desires to please God, which is not possible without faith (Hebrews 11:6). One of the ways by which a believing Christian can build up his or her faith is through prayer (Jude 20). As you commune with God, the more you will have faith in God. The scripture says that iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17). God is a faith God, He created everything through faith (Hebrews 11:3) and so as you fellowship with God in prayer, your ability to exercise faith in God is sharpened.

6. Establishment God’s kingdom and will

When you love God, you will desire to see God’s kingdom and will established on earth. Our Lord Jesus Christ, when teaching the disciples how to pray, asked them to pray for God’s kingdom to come and that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). Through prayer, we invite God to do His will on earth as He originally planned. Until Christians pray down God’s plan on earth, the enemy’s plan will flourish, God forbid! Daniel, in Daniel 9, understood that God’s plan for the desolation upon Jerusalem was for seventy years and that it had come and passed, so he decided to fast and prayer about it and God sent an angel to answer him.

In conclusion, prayer to a lover of God is more than asking and receiving our daily bread, it means much more than that. When you gain a revelation of this and give yourself continuously to prayer, your walk with God will greatly be enhanced. Are you a lover of God? How is your prayer-life today?
