Hi, Jesus loves you

Names are powerful and they describe the bearer’s character, attitude and future. Therefore, the significance of a name should be considered before a person or thing is named.  God, the initiator of this principle, applied this truth in all His names. The name, “I AM THAT I AM” certainly is not an exception. This post gives the meaning of this God’s name and how we can apply it in our daily walk with God.

The first time this name was mentioned was in Exodus 3:14 (KJV), “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you” Prior to this verse, Moses had asked God what he was to call Him if the children of Israel should ask for His name. Moses knew that the children of God would want to know what authority or power this God has to overcome their slave masters. The name of a god describes what to expect of him.

The name I AM THAT I AM means that out of all God’s names, He is what you believe Him to be to you. For instance, He is called Jehovah Ropheka- the Lord our Healer. If you believe Him to be your healer, then you will enjoy divine healing and good health. Again He is called Alpha and Omega. So if you believe Him to be the Alpha and Omega of your life, then you will trust Him with your whole life since He knows the beginning and the ending of your life.

Whatever name of God you believe in, the meaning of that name will be made manifest in your life. It is one thing to know the names of God and it is another thing to believe in the manifestation of their meaning in your life. Therefore, the significance of the name “I AM THAT I AM” in your life depends on your faith in the names of God.

The names of God describe His character, attributes and what He is capable of doing. This also applies to our Lord Jesus Christ. He is indeed what He is called: The Saviour, Bread of Life, Author and finisher of our faith, etc. When you call their names in faith, you provoke them into action.

God loves us to call His names in worship. This action ushers you into God’s presence in a mighty way because He answers to His names. God attaches importance to His names being known, believed and called. To illustrate this, He is always quick to say His name, depending on the circumstances surrounding the person(s).

For instance, while in slavery, the Israelites knew that their fathers worshiped the Almighty God and so were calling on Him for help. So, in Exodus 3:15, we have the following, “And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” (KJV)

In another instance, God asked Jeremiah to go and buy a field for money and take witnesses when the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans, (Jeremiah 32:25). And Jeremiah was wondering what use it will be to him since the Chaldeans will take over the land. But in Jeremiah 32:27, God had this to say to him, “behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?”(KJV) God had to mention this name to Jeremiah to prove to him that he is able to bring the Children of Israel back to their land and they will buy fields again for money, (Jeremiah 32:42-44)

The significance of the name “I AM THAT I AM” is such that we should learn God’s names, meditate on them and call Him by those names. And if you are passing through a challenge, locate God’s names that describe His ability to intervene, meditate and exercise your faith on them and God will answer you speedily.

What names of God have you exercised your faith on and they worked for you?
