“Why is it that some people don’t even tithe nor believe in God, yet they’re blessed financially i.e., they have high paychecks?” somebody asked me recently. I believe many people ask this same question, especially Christians. This post aims at answering this question by explaining that the law of giving and receiving is a spiritual law.

He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich – Proverbs 10:4 (NKJV)

The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich – Proverbs 13:4 (NKJV)

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you – Luke 6:38 (NKJV)

There is one who scatters, yet increases more; and there is one who withholds more than is right, but it leads to poverty – Proverbs 11:24 (NKJV)

Truly, there are many people who don’t know God that are genuinely rich, not out of crooked or wicked means, but through hard work. And there are many believers who even tithe but are poor. What can be the cause? The answer lies on the spiritual law of giving and receiving.

Giving and receiving is a spiritual law that governs everyone – both Christian believers and non-believers. Anyone who walks according to the principles of this law will enjoy the benefits anytime and anywhere, regardless who they are.

Two of these principles which some unbelievers also walk by and so prosper include:

1. Diligent hands.

The scripture in Proverbs 10:4 makes it clear that a diligent hand will make its owner rich but a slack hand will make its owner poor. When you are diligent in your business you will reap the labour of your hands (Psalm 128:2). A lazy person, they say, has no future.

A tither who is lazy and is not diligent with his hands gives God nothing to bless. When the Lord opens the heavens (Malachi 3:10), the storehouse of His bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands (Deuteronomy 28:12) and finds no work of yours, you will miss the blessing. But when He finds the work of your hands, His blessing will rest on it, no matter how small it may be. And as you continue to be diligent with your hands, His blessing will continue to rest on your work and it will continue to grow until you will not have enough room to receive the blessing of the Lord anymore (Malachi 3:10).

God is a hard worker (John 5:17) and does not condone idleness, that’s why the scripture says that if anybody will not work let him not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10). Therefore, when an unbeliever is diligent with his hands (giving his expertise) it is just and appropriate that he should earn according to the works of his hands. The labourer is worthy of his wages (1 Timothy 5:18). However, when a Christian believer desires riches and does nothing he will get nothing (Proverbs 13:4).

2. Giving hands

This is a spiritual law that unbelievers engage in and so prosper. The measure with which you give is the measure by which it will be given back to you (Luke 6:38). When you give bountifully you receive bountifully (2 Corinthians 9:6, Proverbs 11:24). Non-Christians may give not knowing God or the scriptures backing their actions, but God knows their works (Revelations 2:2) and blesses them so that they can give more and more (2 Corinthians 9:10). Every time they give, they bless at least a soul who gives thanks unto God (2 Corinthians 9:11-13), and anyone who gives to the poor lends to God, and He surely pays back (Proverbs 19:17).

God wants to meet the needs of mankind (Psalm 145:15-16) and anyone who is willing to work with Him will be empowered to do so, and that includes financial empowerment.

However, a believing Christian who is diligent and is a giver positions himself/herself for greater manifestations when he/she tithes and gives offerings to God (Malachi 3:8-12). The person not only receives financial blessings but also enjoys other benefits of walking in the covenant of financial prosperity, which includes blessings without sorrow, total health, fruitfulness, long life and protection over the blessing.

In conclusion, yes, it is possible to have fat paychecks without paying tithes or knowing God, but it is best to know God and give your tithes because its blessing goes beyond earthly blessings to secure you an eternal place with God in heaven. That is more profitable, for what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul (Matthew 16:26)!
