Do you also speak with an unknown tongue? Speaking with an unknown tongue is another important use of a believer’s tongue. And an understanding of it will greatly enhance your Christian walk with God. So, this post gives you what you need to know about praying with an unknown tongue.

Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you; but you are to remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed (fully equipped) with power from on high. – Luke 24:49 AMP

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance – Acts 2:1-4(NKJV).

What is an unknown Tongue?

Unknown tongue is the language of the Holy Spirit spoken by man, who has no understanding of what he is speaking. Also, it is the first evidence of the promise of the Father, an outpouring of the His Spirit, for the last days. And Christ released this outpouring (Baptism of the Holy Spirit) on Pentecost day.

Speaking In Tongues

This is also known as speaking in an unknown tongue, and a mystery from the Almighty Father. This empowers a believer to serve the Lord and do exploits in His kingdom. And Christ told His disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they’re endured with this power. So, after the baptism, Peter, who couldn’t face a maid, stood before a multitude and openly identified with Christ. And he boldly preached Christ and salvation to them, leading many to Christ (Acts 2:1-41).

What You Need To Know About praying In Tongues

1. It’s a gift of the Holy Spirit

Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. And is given to every believer, who opens up to receive it.

To another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues – 1 Corinthians 12:10 (NKJV).

2. You don’t understand it

It’s a language you speak but you lack understanding of what you’re saying, except where you can interpret too.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful – I Corinthians 14:14 (NKJV).

3. It’s another man’s language

Though you don’t understand what you’re saying, another person whose language it is can understand what you’re saying.

And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?… Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God – Acts 2:8, 11 (NKJV).

4. It’s a sign that follows believers

Speaking in tongues is also one of the signs that follow believers in Christ. As such it’s exclusive to born-again Christians, otherwise, it’s not the real tongue from God.

And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues – Mark 16:17 (NKJV).

5. Speaking in tongues is a prayer language and builds your faith

When you’re speaking in tongues, you’re talking to God. But this time you’re praying in the language of the Holy Spirit. This is why speaking in tongues is also called praying in the Spirit. Also worthy of note is that when you’re praying in the Spirit you’re building up your faith in God.

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit – Jude 1:20 (NKJV).

6. The Holy Spirit Speaks through you

Though you’re the one making the utterances, yet it’s the Holy Spirit who is speaking through you. So, the Holy Spirit makes intercession for you according to the will of God, praying what you ought to pray. This enables you to pray exactly what you need to pry at that time.

Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God – Romans 8:26-27 (NKJV).

7. It’s a mystery

Speaking in tongues is beyond human comprehension. This is because when you pray in tongues, your spirit prays, but you don’t know what you’re saying. Yet, you’re communicating perfectly well with God. And it’s a channel through which God empowers believers to do exploits.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful – I Corinthians 14:14 (NKJV).

Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you; but you are to remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed (fully equipped) with power from on high. – Luke 24:49 AMP

8. You give God thanks well speaking in tongues

The Holy Spirit speaks directly to God when you’re speaking in tongues. So, He says the perfect things to Him, since He is His Spirit and knows Him more than any other.

For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified – I Corinthians 14:17 (NKJV)

For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God – I Corinthians 2:11 (NKJV).

9. Walking in love is more important than speaking in tongues

Praying in the spirit is essential to a believer. However, walking in love towards God and man is more important than it. Hence, speaking in tongues without having love only makes you a sounding instrument.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal – I Corinthians 13:1 (NKJV).

10. You can interpret tongues

Though you can’t understand the tongues you speak, you can actually ask God for the gift of interpretation of tongues. This enables you to interpret what you say. However, remember that it’s as the Spirit wills. So, if He doesn’t give you the interpretation, you will still not know what you had prayed in the spirit.

Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret – I Corinthians 14:13 (NKJV).

But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills – I Corinthians 12:11 (NKJV).

Conclusion

Our tongues do more than eat and communicate with man. Truly, it usher’s us into the amazing mystery of God, speaking in an unknown tongue. And this is very vital for you if you desire to build up your faith and pray the perfect will of God. Furthermore, it’s important for you, if the Lord is to endue you with power for service and exploits in Christ. Therefore, desire from God to receive this gift today and use your tongue more productively.
