what is calling you

Hi, Jesus loves you.

What can be the main thing calling for your attention right now? Many things are screaming at you, seeking for your attention and you may have done so many things trying to attend to them, but they seem not to notice your effort at all. Now, you are tired, frustrated and ready for the worst to happen. The problem may actually be that you have not identified the main force calling for your attention. This post aims at helping you identify the main voice to attend to in such situations.

And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. So he arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you did call me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.” – 1 Samuel 3:8-10 (NKJV)

Everyone has a period when it is as if so many hands are pulling on your clothing to different directions. And sometimes, you just feel like answering none. But do you know that you can answer one and the rest will be attended to as well?

When God was calling Samuel, he kept thinking that it was Eli, the priest that was calling him until Eli directed him on what to do to answer God – 1 Samuel 3:1-14.

Also, at another time, God called Moses through a burning bush. What Moses saw was just a burning bush that won’t burn down and so he went to take a closer look at the strange burning bush and then heard God speaking to him – Exodus 3:1-4

Sometimes, it is not your business, career, family or your body that is calling for your attention, it may be God.

There are so many reasons why God would want to get your attention, among which are the following:

  • Your salvation

It is not the will of God that any should perish – 2 Peter 3:9. So, one major reason why God would seek your attention is to save your soul, so you won’t perish. He may use situations or people to try to achieve His desire. But then, He will never force you, it is purely your decision at the end – Revelations 3:20

  • Closer relationship with you

When you become too busy to fellowship with God, He will draw your attention to it. God longs for a closer relationship with you just like a loving father would of his son. He had it with Adam before the fall of man and had through Jesus Christ made it possible for man to return to this original fellowship – 2 Corinthians 5:18-19

  • To direct and guide you

God, who is the Alpha and Omega, knows the end from the very beginning and so is in the best position to direct you. If you are His child, He wouldn’t want you to miss it in life. Therefore, it is right for Him to call for your attention – Psalm 32:8

  • To deliver you

Look! You have many adversaries (1 Corinthians 16:9), most of which you don’t even know, but God knows them all. The pitfalls they have set for you, you can’t even see but God sees them. And God wants to deliver you from them all. And if God can get you to pay attention to Him, you will never fall and peradventure you miss it and do fall, God will be able to raise you again.

  • To instruct you

As a product of God, you need Him to instruct you on how to live on earth successfully. For you to succeed in your family, business and career and to enjoy good health, you need God to tell you what to do – Psalm 119:144

Therefore, when you are experiencing pressure, frustration, panic, fear and anxiety, you need to apply your break and ask yourself, “What is calling for my attention now?” You may need only a little adjustment here and there as God directs you and everything will fall in place.

You need to be sure of what is calling for your attention so that you would give it the correct approach. At one time, God was trying to get Peter’s attention through a trance; he thought God was trying to get him to eat forbidden meats, when God was talking about relationship with Gentiles – Acts 10. But it was not so with Christ. One time, when Jesus Christ had many people seeking for His attention, He was able to identify the woman with the issue of blood who really needed His attention and she was healed – Luke 8:43-48.

Your child may be misbehaving and you think he needs stricter discipline, when God is saying allow Me to show you that all he needs is little more attention and patience. You may plan your day and everything will go hay-wire, God may be saying, “I miss you and you need Me to direct you.” Your body may be breaking down, and God may be saying, “Practice loving your neighbor or that you need more rest, because it is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy – Romans 9:16.”

I will forever cherish one time I felt my world was closing in on me. During that time, I learnt how to hear from God, how God truly knows the future and has the solutions to all problems. I learnt to have a closer walk with God.

In my first year in the University, my study habit of reading throughout the night when I need to failed me. When I was in the secondary school, I could read on my bed throughout the night and not feel like sleeping and my results were really good. But when I got to the university I started struggling with sleep, I couldn’t understand why and I couldn’t stop it. And my first year result was woeful.

I was already a believing Christian then. I found myself running to God for help. As much as I tried changing my study habits, I listened more for God’s guidance. I started following the leading in my spirit, instead of my head. For instance, before, I would want to finish a particular topic before picking another; but now if my spirit told me to read a particular topic, I would drop whatever I was doing and go for that one and it would come out as part of the major exam questions.

I continued to follow God’s leading until I got another study habit that was perfect for me. I also, turned out to be one of the few people in my class that didn’t need to re-sit any final year exams. In the process, I learnt so much about God that formed the foundation of who I am today.

At that time too, I had a Christian friend and classmate who was passing through similar challenge. She ran more to people to help her pray, instead of sitting with Jesus herself. Unfortunately, she didn’t graduate with us; she had to spend an extra one year in the University.

In conclusion, anytime you have a challenge, don’t be in a hurry to start solving it your own way. Find out what is actually calling for your attention. Stop over with God for some time and find out what God has to say to you, listen and obey. I promise you, life will be easier for you and you will enjoy your time on earth.
