Do you really seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness? This is putting God and everything concerning Him first before anything else. An understanding of what seeking God first means will help you to do so consciously and enjoy its blessings. So, this post explains what seeking God and His righteousness first means.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine – Proverbs 3:5-6, 9-10 (NKJV).
You shall have no other gods before Me – Exodus 20:3 (NKJV).
Introduction
Some Christians think they’re putting God first in their lives when in fact they’re putting themselves, their families, or work first. And some others put God as the last resort or an alternative. Unfortunately, the Lord does not compromise His place in our lives. And as the scripture says, we’re not to have any other god before Him. And anything we put before Him in our lives is a god in our lives. This is why you must understand what seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness means. Truly, this will help you to examine your walk with Him and align properly.
What Is ‘Seek First The Kingdom Of God And His Righteousness?
This is an instruction given to us by Christ, as He admonished that we shouldn’t worry about anything. Rather, that we should seek first His Kingdom and righteousness. That God, the Father, knows that we have need of the things we seek. And that seeking God’s kingdom first ensures that we have every other thing added to us.
Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you – Matthew 6:31-33 (NKJV).
So, what does this mean?
1. It means living right and living for God and doing everything to please Him.
Hence, whatever you do, do because of the Lord and for Him. So, you wake up knowing that you’re to represent Christ in all you’re going to do for the day.
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God – I Corinthians 10:31 (NKJV).
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain – Philippians 1:21 (NKJV).
2. Loving God with all of you
This is to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and with all your strength. For whom you love, you will happily seek to please and will consider before you.
And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment – Mark 12:30 (NKJV).
3. Trusting God absolutely
In seeking God first, He expects you to trust Him with all your heart, and not to try to depend on your own understanding. And He expects you to acknowledge Him first in everything you do so that He can fully direct your path

4. Honoring the Lord with the first minutes or hours of your day
God created the day and woke us up to enjoy it. Then, it’s wisdom to honour Him with the first minutes or hours of the day. So, when you wake up make it a duty to spend time with God in prayer and in the word first thing in the morning. And as much as possible make sure you hear God first before you hear man.
This is the day the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it – Psalms 118:24 (NKJV).
5. Honouring the Lord with your possessions
Let your possessions be ever ready for God to use for the work of the kingdom. And the Father will greatly bless you. This was the story of Peter, who gave his boat for Christ to preach in. And at the end, Christ caused him to receive a boat sinking catch full of fish.
Honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine – Proverbs 3:9-10 (NKJV).
6. It means putting aside your ambitions to run with God’s purpose
Many times, Christians fight to obey the Lord’s purposes for them. And for one reason or another, they would prefer to continue with their own plans, rather than the Lord’s. However, if you desire to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, then run with God’s purpose for you. This was Christ’s demand on Peter, that if he loved Him he should leave the fishing to feed His sheep.
So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” – John 21:15 (NKJV).
