Introduction — Why the Central Message Matters
Now, after observing the text and understanding its context, the next step is to identify the central message of the passage.
This is where many people still struggle.
You have read the passage, and you have even looked at the surrounding verses. However, when it comes to summarizing what the passage is truly saying, there is still some uncertainty.
And that uncertainty can lead to confusion.
This is because without a clear message, interpretation becomes scattered.
Scripture shows us the importance of this:
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter… — Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NKJV)
Notice that:
There is a conclusion, a central point.
So when you study any passage, you must ask:
What is the main thing being communicated here?
One Message, Not Many
At this point, it is important to understand something. And that is that every passage may contain many details, but it carries one central message.
Now, this is where many people get overwhelmed.
You read a passage and begin to focus on too many things at once. Every verse seems important, and every phrase appears significant. As a result, everything feels scattered.
However, Scripture teaches us to focus.
Jesus said:
“One thing is needed…” — Luke 10:42 (NKJV)
That principle applies here.
Instead of trying to hold everything at once, look for the main idea that ties the passage together.
Once that is clear, everything else begins to align around it.
Let the Text Lead You
Now, this is very important.
You do not create the message—you discover it.
In other words, the central message must come from the text itself, not from your opinion.
Scripture gives us the pattern:
They… gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading. — Nehemiah 8:8 (NKJV)
They gave the sense, but did not impose meaning. Rather they drew meaning out of what was written.
So as you study, stay close to the text.
Let the words guide you.
Let the flow of the passage reveal the message.
Asking the Right Question
At this stage, one simple question will help you greatly:
What is this passage really about?
Now, this question brings clarity.
Instead of moving in many directions, it helps you focus.
For instance, when the jailer asked:
“What must I do to be saved?” — Acts 16:30 (NKJV)
The response was direct:
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved… — Acts 16:31 (NKJV)
Clear question.
Clear answer.
In the same way, your study must move toward clarity. So keep asking:
What is the main message here?
Avoiding Scattered Interpretation
Now, let’s address a common issue.
When the central message is not clear, interpretation becomes scattered.
You begin to take different ideas from the same passage. Then you apply meanings that may not be connected. And over time, confusion increases.
However, Scripture tells us:
For God is not the author of confusion but of peace… — 1 Corinthians 14:33 (NKJV)
So if confusion is present, something is missing.
And most times, it is the central message.
Clarity comes when the passage is understood as a whole.
Summarizing the Passage
At this point, here is a practical step.
After reading and observing the passage, try to summarize it in one or two sentences.
Now, this may seem simple—but it is powerful.
Scripture supports this:
Write the vision and make it plain… — Habakkuk 2:2 (NKJV)
Clarity requires simplicity.
So ask yourself:
If I had to explain this passage simply, what would I say?
As you do this, the central message begins to stand out.
Let Scripture Confirm Scripture
Another helpful principle is this:
Let Scripture confirm your understanding.
Jesus said:
“You search the Scriptures… these are they which testify of Me.”— John 5:39 (NKJV)
So when you identify the central message, check it against other Scriptures.
Does it align with the rest of the Word?
Reflect God’s character?
And agree with the truth revealed in Scripture?
If it does, then you are on the right path.
Why This Step Brings Clarity
At this point, something becomes clear.
When the central message is identified, everything begins to make sense.
Details fall into place and understanding becomes easier. Also, confidence begins to grow.
The Word says:
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)
Light brings direction. And the central message gives you that light.
Reflection
Now, pause and reflect:
- Do I try to take too many meanings from one passage?
- Do I struggle to summarize what I read?
- And do I allow the text to lead me, or do I impose meaning?
Your answers will show how you have been identifying the message.
Conclusion
Every passage has a central message. And your responsibility is to find it.
Not by rushing or by guessing. But by observing carefully and following the flow of Scripture.
So stay with the text. Ask the right questions. And let the Word speak.
This is because when the message becomes clear, confusion begins to disappear.
