Spiritual growth doesn’t just happen by accident or chance—it flows from intentional time spent in God’s presence, hearing His voice through His Word. A daily devotional practice is one of the most transformative habits a believer can cultivate.
The Process of developing a daily devotional practice
1. Creating a Routine for Bible Reading and Reflection
Daily devotions help you stay anchored in God’s truth and deepen your relationship with Him. Truly, daily bible reading is the daily food of the spirit. So, it keeps the regenerated spirit growing and healthy, making it ever triumphant over the enemy.
Here’s how to establish a sustainable and life-giving routine:
a. Set a Specific Time and Place
Create consistency by choosing a quiet, distraction-free place and a regular time (morning, midday, or night). This builds a habit that ensures that your spirit gets fed daily.
Christ showed us an example in Mark 1:35:
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. — Mark 1:35 (NIV)
Like Jesus, early morning can be ideal for solitude and focus, but any consistent time that works for you is acceptable.
b. Start with Prayer
Before opening the Bible, invite the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart and grant understanding. This is because the Holy Spirit is the author of the bible and so, the best teacher of the word. Also, He’s gives understanding and grace to obey the scriptures.
Example of what to pray before reading the bible:
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”— Psalm 119:18 (NIV)
c. Read Purposefully, Not Just Randomly
You are not to casually read the scripture, like to fulfil all righteousness. Surely, flipping open the Bible can occasionally yield insight; however, a structured plan fosters steady spiritual growth.
Options include:
- Chapter-by-chapter reading
- Thematic/topical studies
- One-Year Bible reading plans
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Psalm 119:105 (KJV)
Since the word is the lamp to our feet and light to our path, it’s important that we are intentional in reading the scriptures.
d. Reflect and Meditate
If your study is to yield fruit, then, don’t rush through the text. Rather, pause intermittently and ponder what it says about God, yourself, and how to live. This enables the Holy Spirit to give you understanding. Also, it helps to move the word from your head to your spirit were it develops into light and life
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. — Psalm 1:2 (NKJV)
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63 (NKJV)
e. Journal Your Thoughts
Writing insights, questions, and personal reflections can deepen retention and open your heart to God’s whispers.
Then the Lord answered me and said: ‘Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.’” — Habakkuk 2:2 (NKJV)
2. Tools and Techniques for Meaningful Devotions
These tools can help make your devotional time more engaging and impactful:
a. Devotional Guides or Books
These provide daily thoughts and scriptures to stir reflection. Examples include:
- My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers
- Our Daily Bread
- Custom church or ministry devotionals
However, there is need for you to always balance guides with direct Scripture reading.
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” — Matthew 4:4 (NKJV)
b. Bible Study Tools
Use concordances, study Bibles, or apps like:
- YouVersion Bible App
- Blue Letter Bible
- Bible Hub
These tools help in word studies, historical background, and commentary comparisons.
c. Scripture Writing
Copying Scripture word-for-word reinforces memory and allows deeper thought.
Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.” — Proverbs 7:3 (NKJV)
d. SOAP Method
An easy method to organize Bible study:
- S – Scripture (Write out the verse)
- O – Observation (What does it say?)
- A – Application (How does it apply to me?)
- P – Prayer (Respond to God)
e. Listening to Audio Bibles or Podcasts
Sometimes, hearing the Word brings fresh revelation—especially on the go or in quiet moments.
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. — Romans 10:17
f. Worship Integration
It is good for you to pair your devotion with worship music. Worship opens your heart and prepares you to hear from God. And it ushers you into God’s presence.
Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. — Psalm 100:2 (NKJV)
Encouragement to Stay Consistent
- Don’t aim for perfection; aim for presence.
- Missed days happen—return quickly and keep going.
- Focus on meeting with God, not just “ticking the box.”
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8 (NKJV)
Reflection & Response:
- What time of day works best for me to meet with God consistently?
- What’s one step I can take this week to deepen my devotional life?
I’m well refreshed by reading and studying your teaching. May God continue to increase you in grace, wisdom and understanding.
I expect to read more of your write ups daily.
