Are you a true Christian? A true Christian is known by his or her fruits, i.e., the behavior that the person exhibits. Every child of God is known by his thoughts, words, and especially his actions. So, you’re expected to be a doer and not just a hearer of God’s words. This post gives the reasons why you should be a doer of God’s word.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves – James 1:22 (NKJV).

Therefore by their fruits you will know them – Matthew 7:20 (NKJV).

Introduction

It’s one thing to hear the word of God and another thing do it. However, it’s in the doing that you benefit from the word. And a person who only hears deceives himself or herself. Again, anyone who is not a doer of the word of God is not yet a believer in Christ. For you can’t believe and not do the words of the Lord.

Why Be A Doer And Not Just A Hearer?

1. Shows that you believe the word of God

You will know that you believe the word if you obey it. This is because when you don’t believe it’s difficult to act on what you have heard. On the other hand, if you believe, you will not find it difficult to do the word of God.

2. Grow to eat meat

Milk is the food for babes, while the meat is for those who are matured. And you only graduate to meat as you use the word of God. That is, doing the instructions of the Lord helps you to grow into eating meat. This is because as you act on God’s word and see the results, your faith increases to act on more of the word.

For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil – Hebrews 5:13-14 (NKJV).

3. Identified as a disciple of Christ

The Disciples of Christ were first called Christians at Antioch because they were acting like Christ. And Jesus said that it’s by their fruits you will know those who are of God. So, the only way people will identify you as a child of God is by your acts. Therefore, be a doer and not just a hearer.

And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch – Acts 11:26 (NKJV).

Therefore by their fruits you will know them – Matthew 7:20 (NKJV)

4.  Draw souls to Christ

We’re the epistles people read. So, when you do the word of God and people see the results, they will desire to have this Jesus that makes all the difference in your life. This will draw souls to Christ. Also, know that what you do has more effect on people than what you say.

You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly, you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart – 2 Corinthians 3:2-3 (NKJV).

5. Overcome the storms of life

The storms of life will surely come, but your foundation determines what happens to you when they come. And Jesus Christ likened a doer of God’s word to a wise man who built his house on a rock. This house didn’t fall despite the attacks from rain, floods, and winds. So, only those who hear and do the word of God get to build a solid foundation that will never fall. Therefore, it’s wise to be a doer and not just a hearer.

Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock – Matthew 7:24-25 (NKJV).

6. Do exploit

Those that know the Lord will be strong and do exploits. And the only way to truly know your God is by hearing and doing His word. Also, it’s by acting on God’s word that you do exploit. That means if you don’t do the word of God, there will be no exploit to record. And all the bible characters that did exploits did so by doing what God told them to do.

Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits – Daniel 11:32 (NKJV).

7. To have eternal life

Truly, only doers of the word of God will enjoy eternal life in heaven. So, there’s a need for you to be a doer of God’s word if your target is to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven – Matthew 7:21 (NKJV).

Conclusion

There is no Christianity without doing the word of God. To be a hearer only is to deceive and deny yourself of great blessings of God. For it’s when you obey the word of God that you see His manifestations and glory. Therefore be a doer and not just a hearer of God’s words from today
