As food is to the body so the bible is to the spirit. The Bible provides spiritual nourishment, sustaining and strengthening believers in their faith journey. This is a must if you want to grow in the Lord, enjoy the blessings of God and victories over the enemy, and ultimately make heaven.
How is the bible the food of the spirit?
1. Daily Bread
Just as physical food sustains the body, the Bible sustains the soul. The health of the spirit is determined by how much of God’s word you understand and obey. And this is a function of the quantity and quality of God’s word in your spirit.
Also, as Christ said, man will live well when his spirit and body are well nourished. In addition, He made it clear that we live by the word of God. So, the word of God is the food of the spirit.
But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ – Matthew 4:4 (NKJV)
Again, Jesus known as the word of God, said that if you come to Him you will never hunger again. Therefore, clearly, the word of God is the daily bread for your spirit
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. – John 1:1 (NKJV)
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. – John 6:35 (NKJV)
2. Living Water
As water is to our body, so the word of God is to our spirit. It quenches spiritual thirst, providing refreshment and renewal. Surely, no one can survive physically without water, even so our spirit can’t survive without the word of God. And the good news is that Jesus is ever ready to quench your thirst. Hallelujah!
but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. – John 4:14 (NKJV)
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. – John 7:37-38 (NKJV)
3. Light and Guidance
Natural light is very good for you to sleep well, improve your mood, and increase your energy. In addition, it enhances cognitive functions, and improves your overall well-being. So, also, the scriptures, from the light (understanding) you get from the word of God, gives you peace of mind. This enables you to sleep well, improve your mood and increase your energy.
Furthermore, the bible enhances the cognitive functions of your spiritual eyes, thereby illuminating the path of believers, offering direction and clarity. That is, it shines on your present and future life so that you don’t stumble or make mistake.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. – Psalms 119:105 (NKJV)
For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life – Proverbs 6:23 (NKJV)
4. Strength and Encouragement
The bible is a great nourishment to the soul and body. For it provides strength in weakness and encouragement in discouragement. This is because as you wait on God’s word: reading and meditating on His word, His word will renew your strength. For all the doubts, fear and unbelief will fade away leaving you full of faith in God. Furthermore, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, Christ being the word of God. Therefore, constant and consistent feeding on the word of the Lord strengthens you spirit, soul and body.
But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. – Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. – Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)
5. Spiritual Armor
Foods build defense systems and mechanisms to keep the body protected from internal breakdowns. So, also, the Bible equips believers with spiritual armor to stand firm against adversity.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; – Ephesians 6:13-18 (NKJV)
Looking at the whole armour of God, they all stem from the word of God:
The truth is the word of the Lord, and righteousness is as a result of the word of Christ heard. Also, gospel of peace is the gospel of the prince of peace, Jesus, the word of God. Again, faith comes by hearing the word of God. And salvation only comes when you hear and receive the preached word of God leading to you accepting Jesus as your Saviour. Finally, the sword of the Spirit is the word of God.
Surely, our weapons of warfare are not carnal but spiritual and powerful to pull down strongholds of the enemy. However, they’re produced, accessed and exercised through the word of God.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ – 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (NKJV)
Conclusion
Truly, the bible is the only source of nourishment for our spirits. And daily intake with understanding and faith will build a health spiritual life.
