Discerner Of The Thoughts And Intents Of The Heart

For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12 AMP

INTRODUCTION

The word of the Lord can expose and judge your very thoughts and intentions of the heart. The light in God’s word will shine forth on them and reveal their true being and plans. Hence, the word of God can determine the true motive and desire within the heart. This shows that the thoughts and intents of a man’s heart are transparent to God.

Nothing is hidden from the Lord

God’s word serving as a judge, looks not only to your actions but also your thoughts and intentions. And it knows the motives behind every action of yours, whether they’re selfish or selfless, pure or impure. This calls for self-examination looking at the mirror of the word of God, and reflecting on your inner life, which encourages integrity and honesty

Personal spiritual growth

Understanding this power of the word to discern the thoughts and intents of your heart will encourage you to engage much more deeply in scriptures to align your life accordingly. This will foster a deeper relationship with the Lord, and create self-awareness in the light of the truth.

Furthermore, your prayer life is enhanced since you will pray with openness and honesty, and know that God is already aware of your thoughts and intentions.

Scriptural experience

The Psalmist in Psalms 139:1-4 made it clear that God knows you in and out, every aspect of your life: your actions, and your thoughts and motives behind the actions.

O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.

Psalms 139:1-4 NKJV

Also, in 1 Samuel 16:7, God stated that He rejected the man because He had seen beyond his outward appearance into his heart, and found him not qualified to be the king.

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

I Samuel 16:7 NKJV

Conclusion

The word of God as a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart, when engaged, will reflect you as God sees you. Furthermore, it will help you make amends where necessary to align with God’s word’s truth. Thereby, building a closer and more transparent relationship with the Lord, with honesty and integrity, and in all sincerity of the heart.
