SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BIBLE
The Bible is an important asset in the life of a believer. It’s the authoritative word of God and the foundational base on which his faith, direction, and way of life stand. Therefore, learning to live by the bible is learning to live by the word. And understanding the significance of the bible will move you to learn to live by it.
The significance of the bible can be understood through certain key dimensions. These include:
A. Divine revelation
This means
1. God’s word to humanity
The Bible is more than the book we carry to church or a textbook for Christians. It’s God revealing His will and person to humanity in written words. As such these written words are inspired words of the Lord. It’s a living communication, manual for living on earth from the Maker to His creations.
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV
2. Revelation of the Lord’s nature
Through the pages of the scriptures, the laws, prophecies, teachings, and epistles, the bible makes known the character of God. This includes His love, mercy, holiness, justice, and sovereignty. Thereby giving you a true picture of your Master and how to live by His instructions.
And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
Exodus 34:6-7 NKJV
3. Salvation history
The Bible gives a detailed plan of God to redeem man and restore him to his original state, starting from Genesis to Revelations. And this redemptive plan is centered on Jesus Christ from the beginning to the end.
And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.
Genesis 3:15 NKJV
Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.
Revelation 22:7 NKJV
4. Prophetic fulfilment
The Bible is full of prophecies given in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament. This confirms the consistency and infallibility of the bible and affirms its divine inspiration. Furthermore, the fulfilment of most of the prophecies attests to the truth that any unfulfilled prophecy will still get fulfilled in its due time.
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
Matthew 1:22-23 NKJV
5. Eternal truths
The Bible contains truths that will never change, they will remain the same even in ages to come. Therefore, you can live by them knowing the outcome of your obedience and that it will never change.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:35 NKJV
