Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb. And she conceived and bore a son, and said, “God has taken away my reproach.” So she called his name Joseph, and said, “The LORD shall add to me another son.”

Genesis 30:22-24 NKJV

Birth of Joseph

Joseph was born to Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham. His mother, Rachel, had him after many years of waiting. And she named him Joseph because she said that the Lord will add to her another son. This, God actually answered because Rachel had Benjamin, though she didn’t live to raise them.

Lessons

There is power in names

Beloved of his father

Joseph was the beloved of his father. This was because he was born in his old age by his beloved wife. And Jacob showered him with much love which angered his elder brothers and made them hate Him.

Lessons

Never show that you prefer one of your children over the others.

Joseph dreams of greatness.

Joseph told his family his dreams; how he dreamt of his parents and siblings bowing to him. This didn’t go well with them. Unfortunately, it made his elder brothers hate him the more.

Lesson

Be careful of who you share your dreams with. They may not be happy with the good coming your way.

Joseph-an obedient child

Though Joseph was his father’s beloved, he still was an obedient child. He obeyed his father’s instruction to go and check on his brothers in the field.

Lesson

It’s important for our children to grow to be obedient though loved by us.

Joseph sold by his brothers

Joseph’s brothers out of their hatred for Joseph desired to kill him and terminate the possibility of his dreams coming through. They first threw him into the pit following Reuben’s instruction, who wanted to rescue him later and take him back to their father. Though Reuben wanted to save him, those who wanted him out of their way and lives were more. So, when Reuben was not around they sold him to the Ishmaelites, who sold him to Potiphar in Egypt.  And after selling Joseph to the Ishmaelites, they framed him to have been killed by an animal. Jacob mourned for him and refused to be comforted by anyone.

Lessons

  • Hatred can make someone kill another. So, we must beware of any trace of hatred in us to terminate it before it leads to something that will be irreversible.
  • When only a few people are standing for good in a group, the tendency that bad will be implemented will be high. Therefore, work on the group to get more on the good side and prayerfully follow the activities of the group.
  • Surely, one sin leads to another. When Joseph’s brothers sold him, they had to concoct a lie to cover their evil.
  • The end of loving one of your children more than the others can be very disastrous and may even be death.
