Fear Toward God Not by the Precepts of Men

Fear Toward God Not by the Precepts of Men

Hi, Jesus loves you.

Do you know God and really fear Him? People often say that they fear God and do otherwise, sing how much they fear God and yet their hearts are far from God. What can be the cause of this attitude of theirs? This post states that fear towards God are not to be by the precepts of men.

Wherefore the Lord said, For as much as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men – Isaiah 29:13, (KJV)

‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ” – Matthew 15:8-9 (NKJV)

The fear you have towards God should not be that of lip service, it should be a genuine reverence emanating from the heart, in awe of Him. It is not the kind of fear that the devil puts on people; it is the kind that comes from an understanding of who God is, His words, love, supremacy and power.

People’s worship and service unto God are not accepted by God because they are mechanical. They do it as they have been taught or as they have observed. They serve or worship God because they are asked to do so. No, it should not be.

Service unto God should be out of a close relationship with God. When you love God, you would want to serve Him, worship Him, or do anything that will please Him. When you raise your hand in worship it should be in awe of God, not because people are raising hands or that it is normally so in your church. God desires that you worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).

Men are to guide you to God through Christ, not through them! They are to guide you to know God for yourself. Know God yourself! A true child of God is led by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14) not by the doctrines of men.

If you want to know whether you genuinely fear God, ask yourself why you do what you do, and give yourself an honest and sincere answer. If it’s because that’s how it’s done in your church, or because of what people will say, how they will see you; or you want to be noticed or applauded by men, then you have missed it. Your service must be acceptable before God; otherwise you have only wasted your time. There will be no reward for any service or worship not accepted by God.

You need to build a relationship with God through prayer and the study of the word of God. Get to know your heavenly Father, more than what people have told you about Him. O! You will discover so much about Him, that you will naturally fear Him with all joy. The irony is that God wants to reveal Himself to you (John 14:21, Jeremiah 33:3).

The truth is that you will never doubt your decision to follow and serve Christ if you know God and genuinely fear Him. It is awesome when you have the fear of God; your victory over sin becomes established. So, come on board and you will have a great story to tell.

  1. Very much on point. The fear of God is about detesting anything that does not please God not man, and indeed the Holy Spirit is there to guide us. Often times when we are to make some decisions and they are not in the right direction, your inner man nags you: take time to really listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying. Pray over the decision making and you will find peace in the decisions you have made if you are led by the Holy Spirit
