What goals do you have for the year? It is important to set goals now and pursue them if your desire is to smile at the end of the year. I earlier attended a youth congress organized by Living Faith Church, where ‘goal setting’ as a topic was treated and I want to share the summary with you here. So, this post tells how to set goals for a successful New Year.
Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.” Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am ready to perform My word.” – Jeremiah 1:11-12 (NKJV).
I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer when I am corrected. Then the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry – Habakkuk 2:1-3 (NKJV).

Introduction
We have a legacy of continuous improvement in redemption (Proverbs 4:18). However, success in the Christian realm is as far as your eyes can make out (Gen 13:14-15); so, staying in front requires you seeing ahead. Also know that the future has a way of announcing itself unexpectedly, as such demands preparation ahead of time to avoid being caught unawares. Though we cannot retrieve yesterday, tomorrow however is yours to decide whether to win or lose. This, therefore, calls for goal setting.
What are goals?
- A clear image of your most wanted future.
- A clear description of your hope.
- A set purpose in definite areas of life.
- An unmistakably mapped-out path to run.
Reasons to set goals this year
- Goals compel your actions.
- They maintain your focus.
- Your progress is tracked.
- They help you to break all limitations
- You become more responsible and accountable.
- They help you get your priorities right.
How to set goals
Set your goals using the acronym ‘SMARTER’. That is, your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound, Ethical, and Resources identified. Also, specify what area of your life you want to set the goals: spiritual, business, career, academic, relationship, finances, or health, etc.
Tools for setting goals
- Fasting – enhances your prayers.
- Prayer of Enquiry – to be sure of God’s will for you.
- The Voice of God – removes doubts and helps to overcome challenges that may arise.
- Your purpose in life – for maximum impact and divine backing.
- The word of the Lord for you for the year.
- Previous success or failure lessons.
Conclusion
As Zig Ziglar said, “It seems universally true that people who have direction in their lives go farther and faster and get more done in all areas of their lives.” Therefore, if you desire success this year, then you must set your goals and pursue them. Also, ensure that you fan very hot your desire to succeed so as to fuel the speed of achieving your goals.

Your message is a clear reminder to us that the future we desire to live will be determined by the goals we set. Our goals will propel us to the height we desire to rise to. As humans sometimes we become complacent and wait for anything that life offers us. We need to wake up and utilize our imagination and creativity to design the future we ought to have. We should stop living average lives. A mighty warrior is in each of us. We should emulate Jesus who told his disciples to go to the whole world and make disciples of all nations. Today Christianity is a universal religion. It is our duty to reject the average lives we have today and aspire for a better lives in Jesus Christ.
