The widows in our midst need our support, not just sympathy. They don’t need our pity because they’re not handicapped. As such they only need our support till they find their feet. And the main thing to do is to show love to them. This you can do through different means
But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?”

How To Support The Widows
1. Words of Encouragement
Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
I Thessalonians 5:11 NKJV
God wants us to comfort the widows, and most importantly edify them. So, we are to give them words of encouragement based on the word of God. And the encouragement is to help them find their feet faster. Also, the words of encouragement are to draw them closer to God and not farther away from Him.
2. Financial support
“If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.”
I Timothy 5:16 NKJV
Most of the challenges widows have are related to finance. This is because what two people’s money used to manage to solve, only one person’s money of the same amount is to solve them now. And sometimes, the widow wasn’t contributing before because she was just a housewife taking care of the home. So, now her husband is no more, finance is now a big mountain before her. Therefore, one major way to support a widow is by giving her money.
3. Material support
At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates. And the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, may come and eat and be satisfied, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.”
Deuteronomy 14:28-29 NKJV
This is another way of solving her problems, by supplying her with the things she would need money to buy. So, if you have material things to give her, please do, so she can divert the fund for those items to other needs.
4. Prayers
For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;”
Colossians 1:9 NKJV.
Sometimes, at the early stage of widowhood, it’s difficult for the widows to pray the way they ought. This is because some of them are yet to accept the status quo, while some are still offended in God for allowing their husbands to die and plunging them into their present challenges. And these states of mind are not good for them. They need the Lord’s intervention and this is where your prayers for them come in. You need to pray for God to comfort and provide for them, so that they may quickly get back into shape (spiritually, emotionally, and mentally) and continue their lives. Also, you can pray many other things as God leads you.
5. Defense support
Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.”
Isaiah 1:17 NKJV
Widows are vulnerable to oppression by some wicked men and women because of their state of mind and not having a husband to fight for them. This is why God said we should defend the fatherless and plead for the widow. Truly, they need people who will stand up for them and defend them. Also, they need people who will not allow anyone to oppress them or deny them what belongs to them. So, this you can do for them.
6. Help support
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2 NKJV

Widows do have one need or the other like any other person. However, because they lost their other half, it’s not the same as when they were single. So, for every opportunity you have to bear their burden or show love towards them, please utilize it. God says that it is part of a pure and undefiled religion before Him
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.”
James 1:27 NKJV
Conclusion
God expects us all to support the widows and their children. So, let’s not close our bowels against them but rather render any support we can. And the good God who sees all will reward you greatly.
