Verses 1-2

Christ, though God still needed to prepare for His ministry in fasting and prayer. And I’ve noticed that if you truly fast, you don’t feel hungry until you finish fasting. This was also the case with Christ Jesus; He became hungry when He had ended His fasting.

Also, while fasting, He was being tempted, but after the fast, a bigger temptation came. So, we must be careful to remain in the Spirit even after a spiritual exercise.

Verses 3-4

The flesh will always want you to prove who you are to people, which is not necessary. So, you must resist it, and live by the word, which is all in all. And let your life speak for you, for the word of God says that by their fruits you will know them.

Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them – Matthew 7:20 (KJV).

Verses 5-8

We’re not to worship or serve any other god but God Almighty. In this chapter, the enemy said the truth here; Adam gave him the authority over the kingdoms of the world. And the enemy is still using this to lure many people to worship him. However, the truth remains, as Christ said, we should worship no other god but God Almighty.

Verses 9-12

Here, the enemy used the Word of God to tempt Christ. This is still the tactics of the enemy! And the scripture says in 2 Timothy 2:15 that we should study the word of God to show ourselves approved of God rightly dividing the word of truth. This enables you to overcome the temptation to sin against the Lord. So, don’t tempt God and don’t use the word to justify your disobedience.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth – 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV).

Verse 13

The enemy departed for a season, to strategize on how to successfully tempt Christ next time. Therefore, know that as long as you’re living on earth, temptations will always come. But an understanding of God’s word and a strong desire to please the Lord will always help you to overcome.

Verse 14

When you overcome temptation, you become stronger and you get promoted by God. And fasting and prayer empower you by the Holy Spirit for exploits.

Verse 16

Christ always went to church, so we have no reason to avoid the gathering of believers in the church.

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching – Hebrews 10:25 (KJV).

Verses 17-21

The question here is, “Have you discovered your assignment in the book?” Christ discovered His in the book and you too can discover yours. So, let the Holy Spirit lead you to it.

Verse 22-27

When you don’t accept a prophet, you won’t benefit from his or her anointing. And don’t judge a man of God by what you know about him. This is because the Lord is not looking for a ‘perfect man’, who won’t need Him by reason of his self-righteousness.

Unfortunately, many people don’t receive God’s blessings because they don’t accept the ‘person’ of His servant.

Verse 30

They couldn’t do anything to Christ because it wasn’t their time. So also will no one do you any harm as long as you’re walking in line with God’s word and His plan for you.

Verse 32

What differentiates a teacher of the word of God from another teacher is the manifestation of the Lord’s power in Him. And this is a function of their relationship with God; the closer you are to the Lord, the more the manifestation.

Verse 33-34

Just like the Father knows those that are His, even so, the enemy knows those that are truly the Lord’s.

Verse 40-41

Mark 16:17-18 tell us that we can do these signs in the name of Jesus. However, the demons don’t bow to us, but to Christ in us.

So, build up your faith in Christ and His name, and let Him use your body. And He will use you to do great signs and wonders.

Verse 42

When you impact lives, they wouldn’t want you to go. If not, it will be, ‘Good riddance to bad rubbish.’

Conclusion

It’s good to discover our purpose in life and to prepare in prayer and fasting before starting it off. This will enable us to overcome the temptations and challenges that will come our way.

Also, it’s important to build up our relationship with God because it determines the manifestations of God in our lives and our impact on others.
